Colonia, Uruguay
Colonia is a small charming town with Potuguese roots. Its antique arquitecture has remained intact and most buildings are kept in optimal shape. People are generally friendly, relaxed and helpful. You can feel safe walking these streets at any hour of the day or night.
It is important, however, to understand that it is a VERY SMALL town. I came to spend two days. Early in the morning I went to see the town and saw it completely in about two hours. So, I ended up going by bus to Montevideo and returning to Colonia to enjoy the beautiful friday night scene here.
Colonia is very romantic, so it's best visited with your significant other. If you are coming alone or with friends, try to go on the weekend, where you will find a decent nightlife. Weekdays you will find that at night it becomes a ghost town.
From Buenos Aires to Colonia
Take the Buquebus... But don't buy the ticket at the place, rather go online and buy them there. You should pay $40-50 round trip. There are two types of boats - one takes 3 hours to get to and from, the other takes just one hour.
The boats are like small cruises with ample space, comfortable, and even have a cafeteria and store. The faster boat has WIFI onboard.
From Colonia to Montevideo
Once you arrive to Buquebus station, there is the bus terminal about a 1 minute walk from Buquebus. Expect to pay around $10 one way. Buses leave hourly up until about 9PM.
I went with COT bus lines. The buses were comfortable and we had high speed WIFI all the time. The ride was about 3 hours.
