BEFORE THE BITE

Included in the Puerto Rico tropical paradise package is frequent rain and high humidity, both are favorable conditions for the proliferation of the mosquito population.  There are three semi-effective ways to combat these annoying pests:

  1. Retreat - don't share the same place with the mosquitoes
  2. Shield - use a lot of mosquito repellent such as OFF, either cream or sprays
  3. Attack - electrocute them with a zapper!!!  This is the most satisfying and thrilling method.  It's like playing tennis or pin-pong without balls.  You will definitely hear the zap and see their toasted corpse!

Battery-powered Bug Zapper

Electric bug zappers like the ones shown above can be purchased in some local grocery stores (like Morales) and hardware stores.  If you are in Old San Juan, you can buy one at TruValue Hardware store on San Francisco street for $10.  Version 1, though having a more minimalist/attractive look, is not quite as effective compared to version 2 since the mosquito may be able to escape through the gap between the parallel bars.  Version 2 utilizes a double-mesh design so it is almost impossible for a mosquito to escape your wrath.  The common disadvantage to both is the lack of an electronic score keeper.  Also, neither are effective against "no-see-ums".

As harmless or ineffective as these rackets may look, it is not advisable to press the "on" switch while touching the mesh with your hands. :)  Also, try not to zap your significant other with the device either.  Try if you dare, but you will regret in either case.

AFTER THE BITE

Of course you can not always win.  If you have been beaten, it is recommended that you apply ointments such as "AfterBite" itch eraser (~$10), which is available in both adult and children formulation.  Another effective product is Gold Bond Medicated Anti-itch cream ($4).  By  all means, follow the directions included with these products.
