Yes, taxis are notorious almost everywhere for being a little shady about getting from point A to point B in the shortest route possible, but Buenos Aires taxis are among the worst. Here are a few tips:

First, avoid taking taxis that aren't marked as "Radio Taxi". "Radio Taxi" can still scam you, but they are much less likely to do so.

Scams, the more of a tourist you act like, the more rounds they will give you around the block before taking you to your destination. A $5 peso ride can become a $50 peso ride. So, keep it short and to the point - directions and that's it.

Look in a map and find a main street that goes in the direction where you want to go. Many times, you can walk a few blocks and get to a principal road, where you know that the driver must go straight to reach your destination. If you take the taxi from an inroad, prepare to go around the block several times.

NEVER pay with big bills, meaning $50 or $100. Try to pay with exact change. It is VERY common for taxi drivers to give you the entire change in fake bills. You won't know the difference, but locals do. With inflation so high in this country, there are tons of fake bills going around.
